The SOS Homeschool curriculum is an abbreviation for Switched on Schoolhouse published by the Alpha Omega Publications. It is a computer driven program that many families like to use.

The facts about SOS homeschool:

sos homeschool
  • Bible-based
  • Used for grades 3-12
  • Grades student work and keeps track of records
  • Keeps track of what work is to be done each day.
  • We used SOS for 2 years for Language and Math for one of our children. You can read my Switched on Schoolhouse review and get my perspective. When looking at curriculum or books to use for homeschooling, I find that it's important to look at the pros and cons first.

    Pros:

  • The computer takes care of all the grading.
  • The computer keeps track of what assignments need to be done each day.
  • The curriculum is customizeable. If you find that some parts are not necessary or redundant, you can delete them. You can also assign what days you want school work assigned and what days you want off.
  • This is a Bible based curriculum so you don't have to worry about any inappropriate material.
  • The lessons also sometimes use video clips and other multimedia methods to teach rather than just using dry text.
  • The student gets automatic reminders when their schoolwork is not up to date. Prevents nagging from parents.

    Cons:
  • Students that use this curriculum spend more time on the computer than students that use regular books.
  • Some have reported that they feel that there is not enough review material in some subjects or that the math concepts might not be explained enough.

With any type of computer work, there is always the possibility for software issues or computer problems delaying work time.
