Our America Review

The book Our America . . . The Pilgrim Adventure was given to me for review recently. Susan Kilbride has written a science unit study book that I have reviewed so I was interested to see what she had available for history.

The book is about Finn and Ginny two fictional twins whose parents are lost in time. The kids decide to go back to early American to see if they can find their parents. The twins end up on the Mayflower where they learn about all the adventures that the Pilgrims had that they never knew about. Since this is not your traditional textbook account, the story makes it easy to teach history without really knowing that someone is learning about history.

My husband read this book to our son in the evenings before bedtime. Although I really wanted my son to read this on his own, he just couldn't get motivated to read it so my husband read it to him instead. They enjoy a good story and thought that this one did a good job of bringing the Pilgrim story into a new light.

It looks like there will be more stories in this series where the author will take real events and put them into story format so that students will read and not even realize that they are learning about history. Susan has also written a science book called Science Unit Studies for Homeschoolers and Teachers that I reviewed earlier in the year. Being a homeschool mom herself, Susan knows what homeschoolers are looking for and delivers that in her books. She knows that "the best way to teach history wasn't by using standard text books but by telling the stories of the people who lived it."

I'm looking forward to reading more stories from Susan that will give us a good story and help us understand history better. She also includes some free companion unit studies to Our America and her other books at http://funtasticunitstudies.com/lessons-and-activities/. You can order the Our America...The Pilgrim Adventure on Amazon by clicking on the book above or you can get the Kindle edition too.
