Bob Jones Homeschooling Information for Parents and Students

Another popular curriculum is the Bob Jones homeschooling program. Here is an article that gives you some more information about this program. My comments are at the end.

Bob Jones homeschooling is a Christian based curriculum designed to promote "critical thinking skills with real life applications." It is a k-12 school which delivers its courses via: DVD, hard drive, satellite, and online. In addition to the basics, there are many specialized courses offered. This system of education is premised on the belief that it is insufficient for a child to memorize facts and figures. The child must fully understand the subject matter and be able to relate it to life experiences.

The DVDs are leased from Bob Jones University Press and so there is no additional charge if there are multiple students in the household. They can be viewed on computer, television, or a DVD player. Parents are responsible for guiding their children in working through the program. It is not clear from the material provided whether lesson plans and prompts are provided to parents.

The hard drive program is available for kindergarten through eight grade. Parents lease the hard drive for one class level for one year which plugs into the USB port of their home computer. The program is menu driven which makes navigation quite easy.

The satellite program is no longer available as it has been replaced by the online program which is delivered over the Internet for kindergarten through 12th grade. Courses are taught by certified teachers. A convenient monthly payment plan is offered and discounts are provided for more than one student in a family. This program is only available to those in the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Online polls indicate high praise for this particular school and thus it bears looking into, especially by those parents looking for an innovative home school which incorporates Christian ideals into its courses and which promises to teach students how to think critically and to interact with the world in which they live and become responsible citizens.

My Comments: Although Bob Jones does have distance learning, this author failed to mention that they also have textbooks and workbooks available that can be used without the DVDs.

I'm thinking that most families that use BJU press are purchasing the books and teaching from the books or teacher manuals. Although the DVD option sounds tempting, I think that most homeschool families are not able to afford it.

I only know of one family that used the BJU satellite school a few years back where the mom had to get up at all hours of the night to record the classes that her children needed to see. They quickly abandoned that and sent their children to public school.

Now that the DVD program is available, I'm sure it is much easier for the parents. If parents have problems paying for that version, then they can easily opt for purchasing the textbooks and workbooks that they need. You can also purchase complete grade level kits from them if you choose to do so.

Bob Jones books do not have as high of a resale value as Abeka curriculum, but there are still plenty of people out there that use them that would like to purchase used books from others.

As with any curriculum that you are considering purchasing, it's important to ask lots of questions and make sure that this fits your child's learning style and your teaching style.
